The "Zhongguo Wushu Renming Cidian" ( the dictionary of chinese famous martial artists) is a real Who's Who in Chinese martial arts. It records 6157 famous master biographies from ancient to recent times. Song Zide, a famous Tanglang (Praying Mantis) master of the end of the Qing dynasty and grandfather of Wang Yuanqian, is of course recorded in it. So is Wang Yushan, his father, who won the 1933 Jinan free fighting tournement and was known as one of the "3 mountains of Laiyang". So is Wang Yuanqian, a rare priviledge for a contemporary master. It is this notice that we translate and complete below.

Wang Yuanqian, born in 1935 in Laiyang, Shandong, has inherited the art of Praying Mantis fighting from his father, the famous Wang Yushan. From early age he spontaneously followed his father to study his Tanglang Quan and systematically mastered every single form, exercise and technique.

In 1970, he starts devoting his leisure time to teaching martial arts. In the early eighties he becomes the martial arts trainer of the Qingdao Medical University, and was filmed performing his art by the chinese authorities which recognised him as a living treasure during the post-Cultural Revolution national wushu survey. In 1986 he created the Qingdao Qindao martial art association and becomes his president while still teaching actively without asking for fees.

However he gained the deep and sincere attachment of all his disciples who spread his name all over the country and also abroad, in the USA and in Russia where he has been invited to demostrate his art in 1998.
He is also a committee member of Qingdao Wushu Association, Vice-President of Qingdao Tanglang Quan Reseach Association, consultant of Weifang Tanglang Quan Reseach Association. In 2000 he is invited to share his knowledge in France by the European Reseach Institute on Chinese Martial Art.

Master Wang Yuanqian passed away in 2002. (memorial page)
