Trip 2006

The trip in China although a little shorter this year, was as profitable as usual

Shandong Jiaodong

- Interview of several old masters already introduced in the Qingdao martial art circles at the time of Guomingtang
e.g.: visit to Erlang quan master, Liu Fengtai
(90 years old). His Master of Erlang quan,
Wang Yushan (1884-1952), homonym of the
famous Master of Tanglang quan (same Chinese
characters), but originating from Hebei, is also
in the Dictionary of the famous Chinese martial
artists. In addition to his bare hand fighting art,
this school was famous for its handling of many
traditional weapons.

- Visit of Master Wang Yuanqian's tomb at the doorstep of the Laoshan mountains (the cradle of Tanglang)
We offered a crown to Master Wang and
paid homage (kowtow) to him.

- Cool beer of Qingdao coming directly from
the beer factory to his restaurant.

In Ertong park where we train every morning, we found the troop of the usual characters:
the old man walking around listening to loud music, those going backwards to reverse the aging process, those who where shouting loudly, those who let to their birds to devoice rather than singing themselves.  Fortunately, the mahjong fever,  which prevailed last year, seems fallen down.
On the other hand, a new fashion made its appearance, that to walk with a dog, real sign of wealth, given the price of dog meat, the poors would never leave such an animal alive for a long time.  One epic moment this year, was the replacement, with the means of the edge, by Wangyong
and some old women who share the ground allocated in this public park to the club of Taiji Tanglang quan of Qingdao, of a moribund tree by another offered for  free by the workmen charged to border with trees the “beer street” in view of the 2008 olympic games.

Fujian

The province of Fujian was always very favourable to the development of martial arts.
(It is from styles practiced in this province that Japanese karate originated via Okinawa.)
Indeed, its coasts were infested with pirates. Surrounded by mountains, with an access to the sea,
it was the refuge of the last pretenders of the fallen dynasties and a place from where the rebelions against the central power were organized. For example when the Mandchou invador  dethroned the last Ming emperor. Therefore it’s not surprising that it is the presumed location where took place the destruction of the south Shaolin temple by the Qing illustrated many times in chinese movies (specially in hongkong ones). The temple razed in 1763 by order from the emperor Qianlong reappeared about 15 years in two different places: the south Shaolin temple in the north of Putian city and the south Shaolin temple of the city of Quanzhou, both claiming the legitimacy to succeed to the legendary temple from which might have originated a large numbers of present days southern styles.
Without going through the details of this polemic, the temple of Putian has in its favor the discovery of archeologic remains like for example, jars which contained medicinal substances used in conjonction with the practice of martial arts. On the other hand, the localisation of the temple of Quanzhou, more in the south, is in better agreement with what has been reported in old texts (from the Xi shan zazhi ).
Whatever that might be, one thing is sure: both temples are sparkling new.

- Visit of the south Shaolin temple of Quanzhou.

-Visit of Hulishan in Xiamen, where one section shelters a museum of chinese weapons with many swords and other more exotic weapons. Also visit of the Xiamen university archeological museum recently renovated, which contains in particular, a small but interesting collection of long weapons : tridents, spears, pikes, ... . Two other major sites are of great interest in Xiamen: the south Putuo temple, from which the Wulao peaks can be climbed up, with a magnificent view of Xiamen from top; the Gulangyu Island that was the starting point for Zheng Cheng Gong to conquer back Taiwan from the Dutch. On the island, the museum dedicated to the mighty national hero, shelters a few weapons and armours. Traces of his army camps can also be seen on the way up to ”the peak of the solar light”.

Guangdong

Guangzhou (Canton) is the capital of the Guangdong province. It has interesting archeological remains from the period of the western Hans
and has two museums where old weapons are exposed: The Guanzhou museum inside the
Zhenhai
tower (Zhenhailou);
King Nanyue’s grave museum that was built on the very site where the royal tomb was discovered remarkably
intact in 1983.
